Info about Delaware
Delaware is a state located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. It is bordered by Maryland to the south and west, Pennsylvania to the north, and New Jersey and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. The state was named after the Delaware River, which was named after Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr, an English nobleman, and Virginia's first colonial governor. Delaware has been known as "The First State" since December 7, 1787, when it became the first of the 13 original states to ratify the U.S. Constitution. The nickname was officially recognized on May 23, 2002, after a request by Mrs. Anabelle O'Malley's First Grade Class at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School.
In addition to being the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution, Delaware has a rich history. It was one of the 13 colonies that declared independence from Great Britain in 1776, and it played an important role in the American Revolution. Delaware was also a major center of industry and commerce in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and it was the site of many important battles during the Civil War. Today, Delaware is home to many important institutions of higher education, including the University of Delaware and Delaware State University. The state is also known for its beautiful beaches, historic sites, and vibrant culture.
